Managing Routes

Written by Zachary Hensley

Overview

Routes allow you to group multiple deliveries into a single trip, making them an efficient option for recurring deliveries, scheduled distribution, and multi-stop operations.

Whether you're delivering to multiple customers or replenishing several locations, routes help simplify planning while reducing the need to create individual deliveries.

What is a Route?

A route is a collection of multiple delivery stops completed by a single driver.

Routes are commonly used for:

  • Retail store replenishment

  • Medical and pharmaceutical deliveries

  • Industrial supply distribution

  • Scheduled delivery programs

  • Multi-stop commercial deliveries

Each route is completed by one driver using a single vehicle.

Creating a Route

Routes can be scheduled in advance through the FRAYT Shipper Portal.

When creating a route, you'll:

  1. Add your pickup location.

  2. Add one or more delivery stops.

  3. Select the appropriate vehicle.

  4. Choose a service level.

  5. Select a scheduled date and pickup time.

  6. Review the route before submitting.

The platform will recommend an efficient stop order unless you specify a different sequence.

Route Optimization

By default, FRAYT automatically optimizes the stop order to improve efficiency and reduce travel time.

If your deliveries must occur in a specific order, you can arrange the stops accordingly before submitting the route.

Examples include:

  • Time-sensitive customer appointments

  • Business opening hours

  • Priority deliveries

  • Customer-requested delivery sequence

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Routes are assigned a vehicle based on the largest shipment included.

If one stop requires a Cargo Van while the remaining stops could fit in a Sedan, the route will be assigned to a Cargo Van to accommodate all deliveries.

When planning a route, consider:

  • Largest shipment dimensions

  • Total shipment volume

  • Weight requirements

  • Special handling needs

Choosing the correct vehicle helps avoid delays and ensures every stop can be completed successfully.

Scheduling Routes

Routes can be scheduled for a future date and exact pickup time.

All standard service levels are available when scheduling routes, including:

  • Rush

  • Flex

  • End of Day

  • Contract-specific service levels (when applicable)

Routes are a great option for recurring deliveries or planned distribution schedules.

Editing a Route

Once a route has been submitted, it cannot be edited through the Shipper Portal.

If you need to:

  • Add or remove a stop

  • Change the stop order

  • Update addresses

  • Modify delivery information

Please contact Support as soon as possible.

Duplicating Routes

If you regularly run the same route, you can duplicate a previous route instead of creating it from scratch.

For recurring routes, your Sales representative can also help schedule ongoing route programs that meet your business needs.

Good to Know

There is no maximum number of delivery stops on a route. However, larger routes may require additional planning to ensure all deliveries can be completed within the requested service level.

Tip

If your route follows the same schedule each week, speak with your Sales representative about recurring route options to simplify scheduling.
